Flemington: Grand National Hurdle-3 miles
Roisel was by the imported
English sire Blankney (Blankney II in Australia) out of Cooyeanna, an unraced
mare bred at Belltrees stud in NSW. Blankney II, by Flying Fox, was a
half-brother to the Thousand Guineas and English Derby winning filly, Tagalie, both
being out of Tagale.
In
1912 Mr. Agar Wynne purchased Blankney II from J.E. Brewer who’d imported the
son of Flying Fox the previous year. Blankney II raced four times for Brewer
without success before being purchased by Wynne.
Wynne
stood Blankney II at his newly established Nerrin Nerrin stud at Streatham,
giving Victorian breeders an opportunity to breed their mares to some classic
English staying bloodlines.
Bred by Mr. Agar Wynne, Roisel was leased as a yearling, but proved hard
to train. He was eventually given by Wynne, to a friend, Mr. Greg Wall. Roisel was the first horse that Mr. Wall had
raced, though his father, the late Mr. M. Wall, who was for many years
secretary of the Werribee Racing Club, raced a few horses, including the handy
jumper, The Cothbrack.
Before his six year old season,
Roisel was very lightly raced. He did not race as a two or four year old, he had four starts at three years, all unplaced and started seven times for three wins at five
years. At six, he ran twelve times, winning seven races, his last two wins that
season being over hurdles.

Roisel opened at 3 to 1, and started a 6 to 4 favorite for the
Wellington Hurdle Race. Wynne led early, but Roisel, whose jumping is capable
of improvement, had charge a good way from home, and won easily from the
three-year-old, Prince Kingston, who looks like doing well at the jumping
business. Mnebiad was a good third. Didsbury was left at the post, and took no
part in the race. Roisel has 9.0 in the Australian Hurdle. (The Referee – 20/07/1921)

In the Hurdle Race Earlborn was always a hot favorite, going out at 7 to
4, with Fiscom at 3's. Lace Up, and then Verndale, were the early pace makers,
but at the back Fiscom took charge, and at the home turn was just ahead of
Earlborn and Roisel. Fiscom was first over the last jump. Roisel, however,
finished strongest, and won a good race by three-quarters of a length from
Fiscom. Earlborn was a good third and Happy King did best of the others. G.
Dally, the rider of Roisel, was fined £10 for not keeping a straight course and
crowding Earlborn towards the finish. When Fiscom's rider returned to weigh in
he was 131b short, and the bridle had to be requisitioned. Roisel has 9.0 in
the Australian Hurdle, Fiscom 10.11, and Earlborn 10.3. Roisel won recently
over hurdles at Geelong. He is trained at Caulfield by S.P Casey, and is owned
by Mr. G. Wall, of Werribee. Roisel is a six year old brown gelding by Blankney
II from Cooyeanna, by Ruenalf, and shows a lot of promise over the battens. (The Referee – 27/07/1921)

Kilowat leads Roisel during the first round of the Australian Hurdle |
All the
eleven final acceptors for the Australian Hurdle saw the post. Telecles was the
early favorite, but he was replaced by King Neptune on the eve of the race.
King Neptune opened on the course at 4's, and started at 3's. Gold Coin and
Fiscom were next in request at 5's, but Telecles, early at 5's, eased to 8's.
Roisel touched 10's, went to 14's, and started at 12's. Kilowat led for nearly
a round. Fiscom, pulling hard, and Roisel were prominent in the second round.
Roisel led over the concluding five furlongs, and ran home an easy winner by
four lengths from Sandule, who was fourth at the half-mile. Front Rank, well up
in the last mile, finished a good third. King Neptune, after being conspicuous
early, was beaten six furlongs from home, and could finish only fourth.
Telecles, though never really dangerous, saw the journey out, and was fifth.
Fiscom was well beaten before the half mile. Roisel pulled up well. He ran the
3 ½ mile's less 92 yards in 6.43 ¾ which, considering the going, was
satisfactory. Roisel is trained by S. P. Casey for Mr. Greg Wall, of Bacchus
Marsh. He joined Casey's team on April 29, and previous to that the gelding had
not seen a jump. Roisel was originally leased by his present owner, but he was
presented to him last season by his breeder, Mr. Agar j Wynne. Roisel is by the
Flying Fox horse, Blankney II, from Cooyeanna, by Ruenalf. In four starts over
hurdles, Roisel has won three times in succession. (‘Cranbrook ‘The Referee 10/08/1921)
12/08/1921 Roisel was offered for sale on behalf of his owner Mr. G. Wall, by
William C. Yuille & Co. Horse Auctioneers, but was passed-in at 775 guineas. The
reserve was 800 guineas.
26/05/1922 Roisel was leased from his owner Mr. Greg Wall by Mr Richard T.
Paterson who purchased Roisel outright on 31/05/1923.

Roisel leads Shivander and Subtendo over the last in the Windarra Hurdle |
For the Windarra Hurdle at Moonee Valley, there was a
field of 11, which included two winners of the Australian Hurdle in Roisel and Sir Mnemon.
Shivander was a hot favourite, with Roisel and Well Off
solidly backed. There was also some support for Subtendo and Duntulm. Echuca
Glenn, a newcomer to hurdle-racing, did not get past the first jump.
Goldilocks, who eventually finished last, led early. Half
way Shivander got to the front, and he went on from Subtendo and Roisel, and
six furlongs from home none of the others looked to have any chance. Roisel
went after Shivander, and they were together along the back until Roisel forged
ahead. He was two lengths in front at the half mile. Subtendo then looked just
a possibility until faulty jumping at the last two hurdles extinguished his
chances.
Roisel came home well, and scored easily from Shivander,
with Subtendo six lengths away third. Well Off again failed badly, and Mnemon was
never in the picture. (The Australasian

declared for Roisel of the Toolambool Hurdle field, and Mr. R. T. Patterson's
gelding, opening at 3's, Started a 5 to 2 favorite. Flaviol, who was having his
first run over the jumps, came late into the market and hardened from 14's to
second favorite at 5's. H. McCalman was represented by Jewel Song (7's) and
Jolly Phast (8's). Flaviol, who carried H. Cairns, made a lot of the early pace
from Pentagon. Never worse than fourth, Roisel led over the last six furlongs.
He took the final jump a trifle wide, but ran on and won comfortably by two
lengths from Pistolier, who was second last early. Jolly Phast, who looked
dangerous when heads were turned for home, was a good third. Five lengths
further back came Royal Guardian. Jewel Song made no show, and Flaviol finished
third last. (The Referee-21/06/1922)

Roisel did not start in the
Grand National Hurdle at Flemington on July 7, as his nomination was declared invalid
by the V.R.C. Commitee. When Richard Paterson’s lease on Roisel expired on
March 14 last, it was renewed for a further six months. However, when Richard
Paterson nominated Roisel for the Grand National on May 15, he did so prior to
lodging the lease renewal documents with the V.R.C., thus making his nomination
invalid.
31/5/1923 With the mix-up over
the lease arrangements costing Roisel his chance in the Grand National Hurdle,
Richard Paterson decides to purchase Roisel outright for an undisclosed sum
from Mr. Greg Wall.

Betting over the Hurdle Race underwent some changes. Roisel opened at
fours, saw a point longer, and then firmed to favorite at 9 to 4. Mr. Leslie
Stuart's Montecello's gelding, Salamander, was at 5 to 1 early, firmed to 7 to
2, and went out second favorite at 4 to 1. Brown Amos fluttered between 4's and 9 to 2,
Jewel Song was at 5's early, hardened to 3 to 1 and returned to his original
quote. Jewel Song made a lot of the pace, but was joined by Fairland at the five
furlongs post. The pair led round the home turn, but Jewel Song was first into
the straight, and looked a likely winner to the half distance. Rosiel, who
cleared one of the hurdles only moderately, finished gamely and won a good race
by a neck from Jewel Song, who battled out the race gamely. Fairland was a
moderate third, but shows signs of improvement. Werai and Brown Amos followed
the place-getters. The veteran Telecles was in the field but finished last. Roisel
is owned by Mr. R. T. Paterson, and is trained at Caulfield by S.P. Casey. Roisel
ran only fifth in the V.A.T.C. Khartoum Hurdle a week earlier, but he met a
much better field in that race than at Aspendale. Roisel carried 11.9 on
Saturday. He is in good heart at present, and is likely to be one of the stars
of the approaching jumping season. Roisel has won several times over the
battens. His successes include the Australian Hurdle Race of 1921. (The Referee- 7/05/1924)
There was mild
demonstration against Roisel at the conclusion of the Hurdle Race at Aspendale
on Saturday. At Caulfield the previous week, after showing promise in running
second to Reparation at Sandown, the aged gelding, jumping stickily, tailed the
field in the Khartoum Hurdle race for the greater part of the journey, and
finished so weakly as to suggest that he was quite outclassed by the
opposition. At Aspendale (says a writer) Roisel put heart into his work from
the commencement. Going out at 9 to 4 Roisel beat Jewel Song by a head.(The Advertiser – Adelaide
7/05/1924)
Owing to a disagreement between Mr. R. Patterson, owner of the hurdle racer
Roisel and his trainer, S. P. Casey, the gelding named left Casey's stable on
Wednesday evening, and for the present is understood to be in the care of W.
Murrell, the cross-country jockey, who usually rides Roisel in his hurdle race
engagements (writes The Age). As far as can be learned the trouble between
owner and trainer arose on Monday morning, when the victory of Roisel at
Aspendale and contingencies arising therefrom were under discussion. The
trainer complained too, so it is said, that Murrell, the jockey, was taken more
into the confidence of the owner than he was, and the upshot of it all was that
Casey decided to relinquish the training of the gelding. That he did so with
regret may be gathered from his statement that he regards Roisel as one of the
best hurdle racers in Australia at present, and that he was hopeful of winning,
through the gelding's agency, some good races in the near future. (The Register –Adelaide

Roisel leads Sir Blankney past the stands the first time round |
The retirement of Jackstaff at
1.21pm left only five runners to compete for the £2100 prize associated with
the Australian Hurdle. Jackstaff suffered from shoulder soreness, and in view
of his big weight and the condition of the horse, his owner did not regard the
gelding as having any chance of success. Groganite was always, favorite. When
the weights were announced, his quote was only 5 to 1, and in the week
preceding the races, he was never better than 3 to 1. Groganite opened at 9 to
4 on the course, touched 6 to 4, and started at 2 to 1. Roisel firmed from 3 to
1 to 5 to 2. Mnemar saw 6 to 1, and started at 7 to 2. Backers of the favorite
got a poor run for their money, as Groganite blundered at the first jump, and
lost his rider at the second obstacle. Jaso led in the first round, but was
jumping badly, and clouted very heavily at the hurdle opposite the stand. Later
on Mnemar had charge, but he was running down his hurdles. Sir Blankney took
the lead in the second round. Mnemar and Roisel were in front before the home
turn, where Sir Blankney appeared to be heaten. Mnemar led into the straight,
but took the last jump indifferently. Roisel slipped up on the rails, and
leading inside the half distance, won easily from Mnemar, with Sir Blankney a
moderate third, and Jaso a bad last. W. Murrell rode a nice race on Roisel, who
also won the Australian Hurdle in 1921, and ran third a season later. Roisel is
the second horse to win the race twice, as Uxbridge captured the long distance
Hurdle in 1912, and again in 1915. W. Murrell, the rider of Roisel, stated that
his mount hung out early, but came home strongly. C. Boyd stated that he had a
hard ride on Mnemar, who ran down several jumps. Roisel is trained at
Mordialloc by G. Murrell for Mr. R. T. Patterson. (‘Sedden’ The Referee 6/08/1924)

Early
speculation on the Australian Steeplechase was very light, and at the final
preposts only three of the twelve acceptors were supported. Roisel touched 2's
on the course, and went out favorite at 5 to 2. Fleetstone, 5's overnight, saw
6's against on the course, and firmed to 9 to 2. Palbi was well supported at
7's, and Broodseinde came from 10's to 8's. The whole twelve acceptors were
well together for the first round, and no mishap occurred until the eleventh
fence, where Quarryman fell and brought down the New Zealander Pittsworth. When
Quarryman fell he broke a leg, and was subsequently destroyed. Aberbar fell at
the top of the hill in the second round, and Someworth came down at the last of
the treble. Front Rank fell later on. Berribee made a share of the early
running, but jumped moderately. Roisel and Fleetstone were the pacemakers
subsequently, but Fleetstone dropped back beaten at the railway side, where the
50 to 1 chance Wooloo was noticed to be putting in a good run. Once in the
straight it was seen that Roisel had his opponents in trouble. Roisel went on
and won easily from Wooloo, who most unexpectedly put up a good race. Wooloo
also ran second in the Australian Steeplechase in 1921. The Sydney-sider Palbi,
who carried E. Moon, was in the middle of the field early, and finished a fair
third. Broodseinde was placed fourth, and the others to finish were Berribee,
Fleetstone and Royal Abbey, in that order. Roisel and his rider, W Murrell,
received an enthusiastic reception on returning to scale. Roisel also won the
Australian Hurdle on the previous Saturday. He is the third horse to capture
this double. The others were Colonel Shilinski and the Sydney gelding Les
Paddington. The time, 7min 47sec, was three and a quarter second outside the
record for the race, held by Algous. (‘Sedden’ The Referee

A curious
trait in Roisel's character is that he will not eat away from home. He might
have done better in the Australian Steeplechase but for this. The gelding is
trained at Mentone, and in ordinary circumstances he would have been
transferred temporarily to Caulfield so that he could be given a thorough
schooling. Once this was tried, but Roisel fretted, and declined to eat, and
his condition fell away. The only alternative was to requisition a pilot
engine, and have him conveyed from Mentone to Caulfield to do a round of the
fences there a couple of days before the race. 'We did this twice' said Mr.
Paterson, 'and he was successful each time.’ In the other years he was not
taken to Caulfield for a ‘school’ but was simply exercised over brush fences at
Mentone, and he came to grief in the long race. George Murrell, his trainer,
took him to Sydney in 1925 to contest the A.J.C. Hurdle. He ate nothing on the
way over, nor while in Sydney, and he was such a bag of bones on the day of the
race that I made up my mind not to run him. However, the people who had drawn
him in a big sweep approached me, and just for their sake I let him go to the
post. Even then he ran third with 11.9 on his back.’ (The Mail-Adelaide 20/8/1927)

Roisel clears the last jump in the Australian Hurdle |
Great interest was taken in
the Australian Hurdle. Secret Stone, scratched on the course at 1.50, left a
field of 17, which was the largest number of runners in the race for fourteen
years. Clan Robert, the pre-post favourite, retained his place as the popular
pick. He was at fives overnight. Arroya touched fives on the course, but Clan
Robert promptly hardened, and went out first fancy at 7 to 2. Early course
items about Clan Robert totalled £5000 to £1000. Arroya eased to sevens. The
Sydney gelding, Piratic, was the medium of an eleventh-hour sortie, and he
firmed from 33 to 1 to tens. Scourie went from sevens to tens, and Mowamba
firmed from 14 to 1 to tens. There was a late run on Posima. One of the first
bets about his chance was £2000 to £80 and subsequently £1600 to £100, and
£1400 to £100 were taken. Roisel closed at twelves, and the best course bets
in his favour were £1000 to £100, and £500 to £50.
Woolpack set out to lead all
the way and he practically had command until half a mile from home. Arrova,
Nobility, Grey Knight, and Clan Robert were closest to the pacemaker when half
the distance had been covered. Roisel was eighth for a long way and third just
after the start of the last round. Arroya was beaten a mile from home and
fell at the second last jump. Thurowah fell in the straight the first lime
round. Kenwood, who was nearly always a long way back, fell at the last lump,
and Scourie came down at the same obstacle. Roisel ran to the front four
furlongs from home, and, galloping in fine style, won easily amidst vociferous
cheering, by fully 15 lengths from Mowamba. The latter was one of the last two
in the second round. Spring Mist was well up third. Woolpack, who finished very
tired, ran fourth, and was followed by Nobility, Bellanius, and Piratic. Grey
Knight was eighth. Clan Robert, who hurt himself in the race, finished tenth.
Glentronie pulled up at the last jump. Roisel's time 6.36½ was slow when
compared with last year's figures, but Mr. Patterson's gelding was not pushed
over the last two furlongs.
The discovery has been, made
that the Australian Hurdle was run over a wrong course. The horses covered 3
miles 3 furlongs and 128 yards, or one furlong and 108 yards more than they
should have done. Mr. T. A. Tabart, secretary of the V.A.T.C. conferred with
the Club's surveyor, Mr. C. Tuxen as to the course measurements. It was
ascertained that last year's race, when the distance was similar, was run over,
the same course. The advertised, distance of the race was 3 miles and a quarter
and 20 yards, but as the starting point was at the 7 furlongs the competitors
really covered 3 miles 3 furlongs and 128 yards. No trouble is, however, likely
to arise from the discovery, because under Rule 1918 an objection should have
been lodged before the riders weighed in. (‘Sedden’ The Referee

Clan Robert leads Roisel over the last in the Australian Steeplechase |
Enthusiasm ran high when
the Australian Steeplechase was about to be decided. Though Nyangay was a hot
favorite, the field was regarded as a good one. Besides the Grand National
Steeple winners, Nyangay and Clan Robert, it included, the evergreen Roisel, who
won the big Caulfield cross-country race in 1924, the sturdy Epergne, and the
Onkaparinga Great Eastern Steeple dead-heaters, Mount Cooper and Unohoo. One
wager about Nyangay was £2000 to £1000, and he started at 2 to 1. The principal
wager about Clan Robert was £2500 to £500, and his closing price was 6's.
Epergne, and Derision were equal third fancies at 8's. The latter came from
12's. Roisel saw 12's, and started at 10's, after three bets of £1000 to £80
had been noted in his favor. With the journey reduced to three miles and a
half, a solid pace was expected. Melotte fell early. Mount Cooper led for about
five furlongs, and then Nyangay went to the front and established a good lead
from Mount Cooper, with Clan Robert fourth and Roisel seventh. Nyangay was well
in front when he faced the stand treble for the last time, Unohoo fell at the
first of the treble, and Glentronie and Perpetual also came down at the same
obstacle.
Nyangay, who had taken
one or two chances earlier in running, clouted heavily and fell at the second
of the stand treble. This left Mount Cooper well in front from Clan Robert, and
Roisel. Six furlongs from home Clan Robert and Mount Cooper were together, and
Roisel next was observed to be going strongly. Mount Cooper was done with at
the half-mile, where Clan Robert led from Roisel. Excitement grew intense as
Clan Robert and Roisel entered the straight together. Both horses came out
wide. Supporters of each loudly cheered their champion to victory. Roisel wore
Clan Robert down. Heading Mr. N. Falkiner's gelding in the last hundred yards,
Roisel won a great contest by three-quarters of a length. Clan Robert
comfortably defeated Bellanius for second place, but the latter came home well.
Derision was fourth, and Epergne was very close up in fifth position. Roisel's
time, 6.59 ¼ , was good for a 3 ½ mile race over 21 fences, but as there are no
other races of similar distance in Victoria, no comparisons can be made. This
was Roisel's fourth appearance in the Australian Steeplechase, in which he has
scored two wins, while he fell in his other two attempts. W. Murrell rode a
fine race on Roisel, Murrell stated he had a good ride. Roisel hit the logs
opposite the stand in the last round. Murrell could have gone to the front
earlier, but he deemed it wise to lay in behind Clan Robert until the straight
entrance. E. Moon says that weight told its tale against Clan Robert. Roisel
has a wonderful record as a jumper at Caulfield. He has also won three
Australian Hurdle Races on the same course. Mr. R. T. Paterson, the owner of
Roisel, is a member of the firm of Carter, Patterson, leather goods merchants.
Mr. Patterson supported his horse well in the double, and did not neglect to
back him on Saturday. George Murrell, who trained Roisel, turned the gelding
out in great heart.

Roisel broke down during the
running of the November Hurdle and was limping so badly in the birdcage after
the race that his connections decided to immediately retire the champion
jumper. It was later revealed by his rider, Ted Moon, that the 13 year old
gelding’s suspensory ligament ‘went’ about seven furlongs from home, so, it was
a courageous effort to run second given that he’d run so much of the race while
injured.
In
all, Roisel’s Jumping career spanned 54 starts over 7 years, in that time he
covered 134 miles, jumped 557 fences and fell 7 times.
Roisel
spent the remainder of his days in retirement at Capt. Colin Chisholm’s
Khancoban property at Albury.
Roisel
died in December 1942 at the age of 28.
